Yeppoon - December 2008

In previous editions of our monthly newsletter Urban Economics has taken you on tours of some of the world’s most remarkable places and this month Ruth would like to help you explore a remarkable place right in our own back yard and one very dear to her, Yeppoon.

Where is Yeppoon?

Located on the Tropic of Capricorn and a 30-minute drive east from Rockhampton, Yeppoon is the gateway to the Capricorn Coast and a popular tourist destination with its beautiful beaches, Resorts and Islands.

Yeppoon - Developments

Growing up in Yeppoon during the 1980’s and 1990’s not a lot changed, as was the case of most small towns. When it did change it was usually for some ghastly purpose (in the eyes of a 7 year old that is), such as seeing our beloved Arcade turned into a Furniture store, which was enough to bring a child to tears. However, over the past 6 years Yeppoon has undergone some dramatic changes.

The first major upgrade to take place was the facelift given to the Main Beach. This much needed revamp provided new amenities such as BBQs, playground equipment, picnic areas and a new amphitheatre that offers an excellent backdrop for many of the Coast’s organised celebrations such as Australia Day and the Pineapple Festival.

Opening in March 2008 Yeppoon Central is the newest and largest shopping centre in the area. This recent addition has certainly added value to the Capricorn Coast and acts as a catalyst for further development. Consequently, many more developments have come about, are underway or planned for the future, including the recently built Hospital, refurbishment of Keppel Bay Plaza, retirement villages and a multitude of holiday accommodation.

These changes that have transformed the urban environment of Yeppoon have created a number of spin-offs for this community including a greater and more amicable retail offer, as well as increased employment opportunities.

However, with these new developments modifying the look, feel and layout of Yeppon, one wonders whether such further changes will affect the original face of the town in which people were first attracted, and at what further cost will be incurred to the township’s heritage and character value as a result?  How will the traditional main street of Yeppoon adapt and evolve following the opening of shopping centre developments such as Yeppoon Central?

As a former resident of Yeppoon I find it exciting to see my hometown take such huge leaps forward in its capacity to accommodate and attract tourists. Although it may have taken on a new shape this coastal community has managed to maintain that “small town vibe” and will always be home to me.
